Mark your calendars!

Our 2012 CSA season begins Thursday, June 14th!

All members are welcomed to start picking up their shares from 4pm to 7pm.
Members who will be picking up on the farm need to bring their own bag, basket, box, we've even seen laundry baskets, to carry their produce home. All other members will have their boxes prepacked in wax boxes. We do reuse these wax boxes! We ask that you please keep them as clean as possible and return them to your pick up location, unfolded, the following week.

For our members that are picking up on the farm you'll notice that there will be an area designated for CSA and  separate area for our farm stand of produce for sale to everyone. We will have a limited amount of eggs available as we are waiting for our young hens to start laying. A few pullet eggs have started a week ago so production should be on it's way soon!

For our members that are picking up at Lake Forest and Logan Square eggs will be available for purchase. These will also be limited quantity!

Future newsletters will be sent out by Wednesday morning. If for some reason we were unable to send it out for Wednesday morning you will receive one by Thursday.

If you live around the farm you've noticed lots of changes to the fields and our farmers hard at work.
Here are a few pictures with what's been going on here!

Green Garlic, Fresh Eggs and Winter Spinach for sale!

Thank you to so many of you who have come to the farm to pick up eggs and spinach!

We can now offer a new crop that is ready for harvest, Green Garlic.

What's green garlic? This is an item that you'll rarely see at the grocery store. Green garlic is a young garlic that is grown before the bulb matures. It's leaves are long and green and the bulb is small and pale. It looks very similar to an over grown scallion. The flavor is amazing! For those of you that are not a huge garlic fan this may change your mind. This young bulb is not as bold as a mature garlic clove and adds a bit of sweetness to your dish. You can use the green stalks and the white bulb in your recipe. One recipe for this green garlic is with spinach!

Green garlic will be sold as 5 to 6 in a bunch for $3.00.
1/2 pound bags of spinach is $4.00 and eggs are $5.50 a dozen.

Pick up for these items will be available in our farm stand, 17970 W. Millburn Road,
Sunday through Saturday between 9am and 7pm.

Here is how to place your order:
Please send us an email, tempelfarmsorganics@yahoo.com
and let us know your name, how many bags of spinach, how many bunches of green garlic
and how many dozens of eggs you'd like and what day you will be picking up.
We will confirm your order via email and have your name on your bag waiting for you in the fridge.
We will accept cash or checks written out to Tempel Farms Organics.

More exciting news!

We had 2 baby goats born on Friday April 20th
and 5 baby goats born on Sunday April  22!
All of them, even their mothers, are healthy and enjoying their new beginnings.

If you come to the farm to pick up your produce come and take a look at these beauties.
Their home is on the east side of the barn.
Please don't feed them as they are all on a special organic diet, mother's milk, organic hay and grain.

We've also added to our livestock............

15 piglets that were born in late February. We bought these piglets from the same farmers as we did last season, Nate and Lou Ann Robinson of  Jake's Country Meats located in Cassopolis Michigan.

We hope that you'll join us for some green garlic, spinach and eggs!

Your farmers,

Tania and Chris Cubberly along with our crew, Tomas, Michelle, Keegan, Duncan and Joe!

Welcome Spring!

Welcome Spring!

What amazing weather we are having! Secretly I have been enjoying the weather while I know this is not right. We should have our snow shovels out, hats, boots and a weekend planned for sledding. Instead we have found ourselves digging out our shorts, enjoying meals outside and preparing our home garden.

Our work for 2012 season began February 29th. Tables of onions were seeded in flats followed by herbs, broccoli, kale, fennel, celery and various flowers.

Our garlic is growing strong in the field. Besides the growing cover crop and over wintered spinach it's nice to see green growing among the soil.

Our hoop house is busy as well with potatoes and carrots seeded in the ground. Our Rosemary to the far left survived well over the Winter. This will be a nice early addition to our beginning Summer Vegetable CSA Shares.

Our day-old Isa Brown Layers that we received in February are growing well. Now that they are fully feathered their brooder doors are open and they're enjoying using the ramp that leads them outside.

Can anyone spot the rooster?

We would like to welcome Duncan to our crew!

This weather does give us a head start in preparing beds. Here Duncan and Joe weed out the blueberry bushes.

Bila, one of our dairy goats is due at the end of April. This will be her first time kidding and by the size of her she looks like she's growing two!
